Cool mud squished between the pads of his paws, making soft noises as he walked on the freshly exposed river borders. In his eyes was the sun's reflection as it began to make its downward arc to nighttime. He could smell all the overwhelming freshness coming into the land with the absence of winter. The sun was stirring the slumbering life under his paws.
But there was a strange scent here too, of life that may never again bloom, of blood from days ago before the snow fell. Faintly, he could smell his kind somewhere, this place was not wholly empty of wolves, but neither were they abundant.
He trekked on, leaving a trail of very large paw prints behind him in the mud on the riverbank, following its current westward. The water was rapid, swollen with the melted snow, cutting a dirty path ahead of him on the plain. Here and there, trees grew strong, he could see them form into a dense wood southward.
