River Wood was silent. Only the gentle ripples of the Star Paw Lake seemed to make a sound. This beauty, lost only for a while, seemed to be the only place felt for peace. So many sick and wounded had once been here when the nights were clear, like this night. So many had drank it's waters or placed themselves into its gentle, cool hands on these types of nights. On these nights when the moon was high in the heavens, the Star Paw Lake was the center of healing.
A wolf gazed upon the pale moon and the stars around. The moon, to this wolf, had many friends among the stars and on the earth below. The wolf wished she wasn't lonely, though seeing the quiet, pale moon comforted her with the fact of it's beauty and its lovely little friends seemed so close yet so far away.
"At least you have many friends, moon. You can at least speak with them whenever you please. As for me, you are the only one left for me to speak to. All my friends, my family, and my pack are gone. I doubt they will all ever come back. All I can do is sit and wait for maybe someone to come," the female wolf said, her voice clear as crystal and as light as a feather, yet sounding wise for only the few years she had lived. "There was no one to watch the Lake when I came back, except you, moon. You watched it, knowing you couldn't protect it. Now, you don't have to. I am here to guard it, even if I'm alone."
She laid down, now gazing into the Lake. She spoke again, a little softer this time: "You healed so many, but have no need to heal me. You can see my scars and wish to heal them, but they are old. They are healed, my ally, and they still do. I do not want to waste your gift on myself. I, Tatdapuhael, will not allow myself to heal myself while there may be others to heal."
Tatdapuhael gazed around, hearing a soft noise. She sat up, listening and looking around carefully. A small, brown rabbit rushed away as she spotted it. A small pebble was kicked loose by the fleeing rabbit and fell into the Lake. The she-wolf chuckled and laid back down, easing herself into into a light sleep. If there was another sound, Tatdapuhael would hear it. She'd be up again before too long anyway...
