Sunlight sparkled off the water, throwing the light in every direction. It was almost ethereal, catching against the nearest trees, dancing. The river tossed itself against the rocks, babbling happily in its own language. This place was peaceful. Here there was no war, no blood. Posed, ankle deep in the water, Akki waited. The sun had already burned her skin; her shoulders were irritated aching with a constant, throbbing ache. The cool water running across her paws and playfully splashing her belly was a relief from the summer heat. This was her season. Her body was firm, well exercised and toned from the endless spars with Halspar. And she was bored.
Akki was posed with her chin tucked into her chest, staring into the water. The water tickled her nose, splashing against her snout. She was hunting. The water was fighting to protect its inhabitants, hiding the silvery scales of its inhabitants from her with its blinding reflections. Diving foreword, Akki’s head plunged into the water, snapping with deadly accuracy at the fish beneath the surface. Her teeth sank deep into the fishy flesh, sliding easily past the weak scales. The fish struggled vainly, fighting vainly to escape its already certain death. With a dramatic flair Akki broke the surface of the water, the fish limp.
With a proud trot Akki returned to the shore, dropping the fish next to a larger one of its kind. With a quizzical glance at the fish Akki settled down onto the bank, taking in the sunlight. Sigh.
Nothing good came of boredom.
And Akki was bored.

Halspar lumbered forward, breathing hard through his nose as his mind concentrated on one objective.
Get water.
A dead rabbit hung from his maw and he looked around cautiously for any signs of potential competition for his prize. He blinked in the bright sunlight as he came from the forest. His great, black bulk protected his hide from burning and reveled in the heat. This was his season, the best season. He could handle the heat far better than he could withstand the cold. As made his way forward, he sniffed the air and pricked up his ears. Akki was near . . . and so was water.
He dug his claws into the ground as he continued forward, blood from the rabbit dripping from his maw. He hadn't actually hunted for the rabbit; his cumbersome nature made it hard to hunt for such easily frightened creatures. This had been a quick meal he stole from a fox that had gotten far to close to the dens for his liking. A raven cawed above him and he snarled at it - no way was he sharing his scavanged prize.
As he came in sight of his Alphess, he lowered his stance and kept his eyes averted. Catching fish . . . very tactful. When she came from the water and deposited another fish, he let out a grunt to let her know he was there and then dropped the rabbit at his paws. He gently licked the underside of her chin submissively, wagging his coursely furred tail. Through spring, they had sparred together, built up the bond as packmates. Together, they had chased away the weakened muscles that Winter put on them. Now both of them were lean, strong, and ready to cause havoc.
If only their pack was bigger . . .
But it was, he remembered. There was one other that should be back by now. Their little spy. She wasn't Heus, but she wasn't any good either. Part of him was pleased that she hadn't come back - proof that Blood Fang should be of pure blooded Heus. But who knew what she had spread around, assuming she was still alive.
"Afternoon, Alphess." he said, raising his head. "Quiet days seemed to have come upon us - Odd, given that its mid-season of some of the bloodiest days in our history."
He shook his body and sat down, relaxed in the presence of another Heus. He ran his tongue along his protruding fangs and contemplated the exciting option of eating. But he saw that Akki was looking for something else.
Akki was bored . . . and something always happened when Akki grew bored.
"I can't help but wonder, Alphess," he said slowly, looking out past their territory. "What might have happened to your little spy. Shouldn't Mercy be back by now?"

Akki ignored Halspar as he lumbered nearer to her.
He was loud, and often times clumsy. His pigheaded, boorish nature often clashed with her more lively one. They were both dominant, aggressively so and she recognized that his submissiveness was difficult for him to maintain. That was where her respect for Halspar had taken root. Apart from his thorny nature he was strong, well built and quick on his feet. But he was loyal, and he was her pack.
His rough tongue brushed against her chin, cooling the skin for just a moment. With a sharp display of affection Akki nipped at his nose, sharp teeth dragging across the surface. Hell, love hurt. Especially pack love. Halspar and his personality had grown on her over time, and though some days she would rather chew on the shiny stones of the humans than listen to him ramble on about destroying Suncreast for another minute, he was her family.
"Why Hali, dear! How nice it is to see you! Oh, and I even see you managed to snare yourself a wee rabbit for a snack... What a special, special boy." Akki's voice was dripping with sickening sweetness, but her tail gently swished in the dirt. It was all in good fun. And if Halspar couldn't stomach it she'd simply have to whop him in a fight.
Males. So pathetic. Prod their pride and they pick a fight they cannot win.
Halspar had settled down in the dust beside her, grumbling something about blood and seasons. Hali, you really mustn't mumble! I simply cannot understand a word you say... But you are right. This land is ripe with the blood innocents, and here we are, sitting on our asses tormenting the local fish populations. Or scavenging as the case may be." Akki carefully preened herself, watching Halspar out of the corner of her eye. He was restless, she could see that.
With a sigh, Akki laid her head on her crossed paws. closing her eyes and soaking in the sunlight. "Really Halspar, you must be bored if all you can think to talk of is our estranged pack-mate. She will return, in time. But it seems to me we really must find something for you to do. You're getting fat, eating such kingly dinners." Taking a deep breath Akki thought.
How could she appease her restless pack mate.
What could she do to appease her own monster, roaring for release?
Brown-red eyes flashed open, and she lumbered to her feet."Come Halspar. Its time to play."

Halspar snorted at the “special boy” comment but couldn’t help but smirk a little. Akki’s sense of humor was not wasted on him. In the time that he had spent with her, he had built some sort of hide to her teasing and instead of making a big deal out of it, he tried his best to humor her with his indifference. He continued to watch her as she spoke about fishing and scavenging. Told him not to fret over their other pack mate. Yet still, his eyes strayed past towards the distant mountains . . . wondering . . .
Come Halspar. It’s time to play.
His ears pricked at this and he stood up cautiously, tail whisking through the air. Their play was other’s might called training in other packs. A slow smile spread upon his maw and he slowly began circling her, muscles bulging out under his dark skin in the warm sunlight. He took a deep breath and let it out slowly, relaxing, digging into his focus as he weighed out his opponent. Even though he had play-fought with his Alphess many times, he was determined to beat just once at her own game. She was quicker than him, more agile. He was more bulk and preferred straight on, full force attacks.
“It’d be my pleasure, my Alphess.” He said, locking his eyes on her.
He stopped pacing until he was in a place that he was comfortable and for once, waited. It killed him not to make the first initial move but something held him back. Maybe for once, he would wait for her instead of rushing in, just for something completely different. He sunk down slightly, taking in her scent, the scent of the warm air and the prey they had caught. They could eat after they were done. His heart began to pick up . . . ready . . . waiting . . . anticipating . . .
He dug his thick claws into the earth, making himself hold back. Not thrusting all his power at her until he was certain how she was going to come at him . . .
Patient . . . patient . . .
A soft impatient growl came to his throat as he forced himself to wait, muscles practically shaking with excitement.
